A couple relaxes around a chessboard in “Cocktail time” by Mariya Yugina. The man sits on the left with one knee raised, while the woman reclines on the right beneath a large green, wide-brimmed hat. Warm orange, peach and pink tones shape their bodies and faces against vivid areas of turquoise, yellow and dark green.
The chessboard’s yellow and dark squares lie diagonally between the figures. Slender pale and blue pieces stand on the board, while the woman holds a single pale piece in her hand. Behind the couple, two cocktails with citrus garnishes sit alongside whole and sliced fruit on a light surface.
Angular fields of colour and shifted proportions give the scene a Cubist character. The title, drinks and relaxed poses may evoke a warm day with time for games and companionship. The 73 × 60 cm format brings the bodies, chess imagery and small still-life details together in a closely arranged, colourful composition.
