A dark-haired woman dressed in red and deep blue takes centre stage in “Carmen” by Mariya Yugina. She sits with her legs extending to the left, meeting the viewer with a direct gaze. Flowing hair, red lips and dark folds of fabric emphasise the figure against a densely coloured background.
Small areas of yellow, green, turquoise, pink and purple form a mosaic-like pattern around her. Large sweeping outlines and a red, fan-like shape on the left interrupt the smaller details. Checked passages meet ornamental forms above, while slender, chess-piece-like figures emerge along the bottom.
The title and the combination of red, dark hair and the fan-like form may evoke drama and a theatrical character, without defining a particular story. The square 50 × 50 cm format brings the figure’s calm pose and the background’s lively rhythm together in an intense composition.
