Two women in swimwear relax on the deck of a boat in “A summer story” by Mariya Yugina. The dark-haired woman on the left wears a pale, wide-brimmed hat, while the red-haired woman on the right sits with bent legs and one hand raised in a gentle gesture. Their warm orange and peach skin tones contrast with the green and turquoise water around them.
A chessboard with slender, colourful pieces rests between the women. Two tall glasses stand on a purple tray in the lower left, while stripes on the deck and the railing’s diagonals guide the eye through the scene. White sailing boats appear in the background beside angular, rock-like forms.
Bodies, faces and surroundings are constructed from geometric fields of colour, giving the painting a Cubist character. The title and maritime details may evoke a summer day with time for games, conversation and companionship. The wide 73 × 60 cm format brings the relaxed poses and the view across the water together in a bright, colourful composition.
