Large, stylised faces with swirling eyes emerge against an almost black background in “Eye catchers” by Susanne Butcher. A dominant figure on the left is built from red, burgundy, yellow and creamy white fields. On the right, blue, turquoise, green and pink tones gather into several smaller figures with shifting proportions and striking gazes.
Fine black and white lines form dense loops, facial features and irregular patterns across the broad strokes of colour. Long drips descend through the figures, while white outlines separate several of the forms from the dark ground. A bold pink field with hanging trails of paint in the upper right introduces another contrast within the dark pictorial space.
The title echoes the many large eyes, drawing attention from face to face. The figures’ proximity may evoke an encounter or a group gathered in a moment of shared attention, while their relationship remains open to interpretation. The large, vertical 140 × 180 cm format gives the portraits a striking presence and offers space to explore the many layers and graphic details.
