A woman’s face with a direct gaze forms the centre of “Caissas Promise” by Mariya Yugina. A round, pearl-trimmed frame surrounds one eye, while reddish curls and hanging ornaments frame her face. Warm peach, orange and golden-yellow shades dominate the portrait, meeting cool accents of turquoise, green and blue.
Above her forehead, an elaborate headdress flows in curved forms with bead-like details and a glossy bluish sphere containing small architectural shapes. On the left, a horse’s head and chessboard-like patterns emerge among the curling forms. Crown-like pendants hang beside her neck, while a blue expanse of water with a small sailing boat opens in the lower right. A golden patterned field spreads across the opposite shoulder.
The subject allows portraiture, ornament and miniature landscapes to merge. The woman’s steady gaze provides a focal point among the many details, while the title and chess references invite a story of games, possibilities and promises. The vertical 40 × 60 cm format emphasises the face and offers room to explore the dreamlike forms surrounding it.
