An imaginative elephant assembled from colourful fields fills “Le fant” by Dorte Juul. A long pink trunk descends along the left side, while a large pale tusk projects diagonally from the centre. Two prominent eyes and oversized, offset ear shapes give the animal an eccentric, playful appearance against the lavender background.
Turquoise, green, blue, orange and violet meet in clearly defined shapes outlined with fine black contours. Small dots, cross-like marks and curved decorative borders add detail to selected areas. The long legs end in pale toenails, and a slender tail with a small tuft appears on the right.
The elephant’s recognisable features remain, but its proportions and perspective are freely interpreted. The face can seem to present several viewpoints at once, giving the subject a humorous and surprising character. The narrow, vertical 60 × 100 cm format emphasises the long trunk and legs, allowing the figure to occupy almost the full height of the painting.
