A golden-yellow woman sits on the back of a blue elephant in “Night Mystery” by Mariya Yugina. Her tall headdress extends upwards into large curling forms, while one leg stretches diagonally down through the painting. Against the deep, dark-blue background, the figure becomes a luminous focal point.
The elephant’s head, ear and curled trunk are painted in blue, turquoise and grey. Beneath and around it unfolds a landscape of chessboard patterns, slender pieces, arches and small architectural shapes. On the left, yellow and green building-like details gather on a floating surface, while a large spiral fills the upper-left corner. Small pale impressions give the dark background a textured, almost star-like quality.
The subject brings human figure, animal and chess together in a dreamlike space where scale and gravity appear suspended. The woman’s upward gaze and resting hands offer a quiet counterpoint to the many moving forms. The vertical 60 × 90 cm format emphasises her elongated lines and leads the eye among the painting’s imaginative details.
