A luminous turquoise passage opens between dark forms in “The way forward” by Ruth Christiansen. From the broad foreground, it leads towards a creamy white and pale yellow area near the centre. Brown, charcoal-grey and near-black fields gather on either side, while dusty pink, lavender and sandy shades soften the transitions.
The composition may suggest a path or stream running through an imagined landscape. Blue-green, branch-like strokes rise on the left, and small yellow marks follow the edge of the darker passage on the right. Fine lines, scratched marks and loosely drawn circular shapes bring variety to the surface without defining the subject.
The title may invite the viewer to follow the pale opening as a way onwards through the unknown. The tension between the dark sides and open centre creates depth and direction, while the abstract forms leave room for personal associations. The square 100 × 100 cm format accommodates both broad fields of colour and delicate details.
