A chessboard both separates and connects two people in “Defy fortress” by Mariya Yugina. On the left, a woman in a pink-red sleeveless dress holds one hand near her lips. Her other arm extends across the table towards a dark-haired man, who bows his head towards her forearm. Their hands meet in the upper right of the scene.
The chessboard’s yellow and dark-green squares fill the foreground, with a small group of tall, slender pieces standing together. Behind the figures, stylised architecture includes arches and a small building, with dark tree forms against a vivid blue sky. Warm orange, coral and golden shades in the faces and arms contrast with cool green and turquoise fields.
Angular facial features and arms crossing the composition give the scene a theatrical quality. The woman’s lowered gaze and the man’s bowed posture may suggest a moment of closeness during the game. The title and chess motif also invite associations with strategy, resistance and approach, without defining the relationship between the two. The horizontal 65 × 50 cm format brings figures, gestures and chessboard together in a closely framed composition.
