A long-eared animal figure with a smiling, mask-like human face holds a shotgun in “Bersærk I” by Peter Beiter Andresen. An olive-green hat sits between the tall ears, while a thin strap runs from the face around the head. The figure turns slightly to the left, holding the gun diagonally across its body.
Pink and peach tones in the face are emphasised by dark eyes, long lashes and round red cheek marks. The body is painted in brown, ochre and near-black, with occasional vivid orange accents. Cool grey strokes in the gun cut across the warm colours, while the background shifts between green, purple, pink and pale blue in broad, soft fields.
The contrast between the friendly smile and the gun gives the subject an unsettling, dark humour. The title “Bersærk I” adds another layer of tension to the storybook-like figure without defining its story. The square 50 × 50 cm format brings the tall ears, face and diagonal gun together in a closely framed composition.
